Get involved !

It is clear that currently the only people protesting against the Dam are those who are directly to be affected by the Dam. Concerned and aware citizen’s voices in large numbers are yet to be heard. This is largely because there is not much public awareness regarding this issue. The value and extent of biodiversity loss due to the project has also not been keenly perceived by those who have heard of the project. Clearly, awareness building should be the foremost priority in the activities to save this ecologically sensitive area.

As the organizations currently involved in this cause are limited in resources, there are some activities planned to generate funds to aid awareness generating activities.

Currently planned activities

Seminar of scientists and wildlife biologists - March 2007, Athirappilly.

Scientists and wildlife biologists who have worked in the Athirappilly region will meet with an aim to exchange and collate all ecological information available on the area. This will also be useful in building a network of well-wishers who could help the cause. The meeting will be jointly hosted by Sálim Ali Foundation and Chalakudy Puzha Samrakshana Samithi at Trichur/Kochi in March 2007. This meeting will be open to the public, and interested people are invited to attend.

More details of this seminar will be posted soon.

Buy a T-Shirt

We are currently selling two T-shirts depicting very special bird and animal species that are highly dependant on the forests of the Athirappilly region. This region is also one of the best known haunts for some of these species like the Malabar Pied Hornbill and the Cane Turtle. The entire profits from your purchase will be used in conservation and awareness building activities.

The artwork for the two T-shirts was made by Maya Ramaswamy, a leading wildlife artist based out of Bangalore. She generously donated her time and effort towards producing these wonderful pieces of art to support the cause of saving the Athirappilly-Vazhachal Forests.

'Spectacular Birds' T-shirt

shirt

This T-shirt is a montage of special birds that are found in the forests surrounding the proposed dam site. The Malabar Pied Hornbill Anthracoceros coronatus is a very rare bird in the Western Ghats, and scientific research has showed that the Athirappilly river basin is one of the most important places for this species south of Goa in the Western Ghats. The Ceylon Frogmouth Batrachostomus moniliger is a threatened species that requires a high level of protection in the Western Ghats. The Stork-billed Kingfisher Pelargopsis capensis and the Black Baza Aviceda leuphotes are recorded more near riverine ecosystems. The brilliantly colored Crimson-backed Sunbird Leptocoma minima and Malabar Trogon Harpactes fasciatus are an integral part of this matrix of forests. The diversity of birds depicted in the art panel here reflects their varied roles in the landscape, and typifies the complex and fragile ecosystem that is under threat by this dam today. This t-shirt is available only in one colour- as in the picture.

'Cryptic Creatures' T-shirt

animal

The second T-shirt is an assortment of some special animals that inhabit this landscape, and most of these species are cryptic, unknown and fast disappearing. The Malabar civet Vivera civettina, an endemic and extremely rare species that has not been recorded or sighted in over a decade, is originally described as inhabiting lowland evergreen forests. The Travancore flying squirrel Petinomys fuscocapillus fuscocapillus, Nilgiri marten Martes gwatkinsii and the slender Loris Loris lydekkeranius malabaricus are all uncommon species that occur in the lowland and mid-elevation tropical forests of the Western Ghats. The endangered Cane Turtle Vijayachelys silvatica was rediscovered in the forests around Athirappilly two decades ago. From the subterranean to the arboreal, a variety of life forms inhabit the Athirappilly-Vazhachal forests, and the diversity of species depicted in this art panel typifies the complex and fragile ecosystem that is under threat by this dam today. This t-shirt is available only in one colour- as in the picture.
