Athirappilly Issue

The Athirappilly - Vazhachal forests in the southern Western Ghats of Kerala host a unique ecosystem of evergreen, riverine forests intermingled with Myristica swamps. This ecosystem supports a large number of endemic, rare, threatened and endangered species of plants and animals. While science is still discovering many of these species, a hydro-electric project threatens to wipe out these forests.

Sálim Ali Foundation (SAF)

Established in memory of late Dr. Sálim Ali, the father of Indian ornithology, the Sálim Ali Foundation (SAF) is committed to research, conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. Although this theme has become a global agenda the country is yet to realize, appreciate and translate it into policies and programmes. Our forests are diminishing, wetlands are disappearing, biodiversity is eroding; air, water, and food materials are contaminated. Water scarcity is becoming increasingly acute in many parts of the country. SAF proposes to examine the various facets of these challenging issues from an ecological perspective and, to create awareness among general public, bureaucracy and judiciary to help reverse the trend and ensure biodiversity conservation and water and food security.
